Testosterone replacement
Testosterone can be used as part of your HRT primarily to help with the symptom of low libido.
- Low libido (or loss of interest in sex) is complex and may be influenced by factors like past experiences, upbringing, body image, relationships, societal, familial and historical influences and expectations.
- Testosterone has limited impact on low libido in women, and not everyone sees improvement.
- Some women report benefits in other areas like brain fog, motivation, aches, and energy - but these are anecdotal.
- We can suggest referrals and provide resources if you need extra support.
- Testosterone was originally licensed for male use, but women can use the same products at much lower doses. This is called 'unlicensed use' when prescribed for women.
- More research is needed, as this area is currently underfunded.
Points to note:
- You will need to already well established on HRT before we can consider adding Testosterone
- Before your Testosterone appointment, you’ll need a serum blood test (from a vein) for total testosterone levels.
- You can ask your GP to arrange this, or book a serum blood test privately through our affiliate, Medichecks (discounted rates available when you book by using this link (Only serum blood test results are accepted - we cannot accept finger prick samples).
- We can offer a private prescription for your first 3 months of testosterone treatment. After that, we encourage you to ask your GP to continue prescribing your treatment for you.
- If your GP can’t prescribe it, we’re happy to continue - provided your testosterone levels are monitored regularly and we can review the results.
